Read This Story: How Presets Changed My Life!
When I got my first book deal in 2013, Teneues the publisher wanted me to do a black and white book. I was a little upset about it as at the time I had been shooting Paris for 8 years and most of my work was in color.
But it was a deal breaker. I had to do it in Black and white
But my first black and white of Paris were terrible.

I knew I had to step up my game orI was going to lose my book deal.

I spend a lot of time studying Ansel Adams, Nick Brand, Brassard and Sebastiano Salgado workflow.
They had all in common, this very dramatic dodge and burn that guides the eye of the viewer on the main story of the photo. I did a lot of study on Ansel Adam book call the negative where he explains his workflow called the ‘Zone System’ where he assigned to each part of the photo a certain grey value.
The results were Incredibles strong images fine art black and white at its finest.
I did a lot of tests with Silver FX Pro, Photoshop Curves and finally Lightroom. After 100’s of hour of trial and error, it HIT me!
The ONLY way to achieve drama in the post processing of the photo was to imitate in Lightroom what the master were doing in the dark room using local tools to dodge and burn the photo. Indeed, the eyes goes go the brighter part of the photo!

What about all the other photo in the book?
The problem is that I need to have a consistent look through the book and that is how I started developing presets so that it was the same very powerful kind of black and white thought the book, this totally changed my workflow. I was able to go through 100’s of photos using the presets and apply that ‘magic darkroom’ techic and see the results right away.
I did not lose the work and my first book got published and sold out at 7000 copies internationally!
The presets help me get a consistent look though the entire book.
Then came the New York book. You see the beauty of Black and White photography is that you don’t need great colors in the sky like a sunset to make drama and fine art.
As long as you have some cool clouds you can get some great shots.
So, I flew to New York and one month using my presets shooting 8 hours per day I came up with my New York book! Over 100 photos!
This book also was printed to 7000 copies and all sold out.
The roughest part: COLOR photos!
A couple of years later I had not the same issue for my Venice book, but it was hard as it was my first color book (I finally convinced my Publisher that color is good too!)

I spent 2 years testing my presets on 100’s of student as every Wednesday I have a show where I retouch all my student raw files using my presets. I had the occasion to test all camera Model, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Olympus and of course Sony and it works 90% oof the time.
